One of the coolest/smoothest artists from the west coast. Jay Worthy was born in Vancouver, Canada, but spent the rest of his teenage years growing up in Compton, CA. In an interview with Hot 97, he was asked what artist influenced his music career, “Ice Cube is my favorite rapper and of course NWA and Eazy E.” He also talked about his relationship with rapper Kendrick Lamar, “That’s the big homie man. We grew up in the same neighborhood.” He was also featured in the Humble music video that was released in 2017 and produced a documentary for him called Noisey Bompton.

Last year in May, Curren$y released a collaboration with Jay Worthy called Umbrella Symphony. Listening to the project helped me understand Jay’s style of rap. What I realize in his music, he uses a lot of mid-tempos mellow beats, from the ’70s & ’80s r&b, soul, and funk mixing it with his street tales. On Hot 97, he mentioned, “It was hard for me to work with certain producers. Because I wanted to use samples from oldies to create my music. Because when I was growing up my pops played a lot of oldies”. Jay didn’t start taking rap seriously until 2014. A$AP Yams admitted to him that he saw great potential in his craft. Since then, Jay worked with a lot of different artists and producers. Down below are some of my favorite projects by Jay.

“Affiliated” 2019

“Burnout 2” 2016

“Aktive” 2018

“Umbrella Symphony” 2019
